Smoking Habits

Thursday, January 8, 2009
smoking Smoking as we all know is a slow poison. It might seem to give pleasure and joy, but the ultimate truth is that it is killing you gradually. It does not stop with affecting you but goes on to affect the loved ones around you. All you require to do is to realise this fact and stop smoking.

The tobacco in the cigerrete is known to be carcinogenic and increases the chance of blood cancer, lungs cancer and mouth cancer. Smoking is also known to affect the heart in a negative way. Did you know that about 80,000 to 100,000 teens start smoking habits every day. Many of them start smoking because of peer pressure.

Of course different people have different levels of resistance against tobacco consumption. Some might have the tendency to resist cancer for a longer time while the ohers may not. In this new year let us all take a resolution to stop smoking to save humanity. If that is difficult we can atleast take a resolution to stop compelling or pressurising others to start smoking.

Now many governments are looking up to serious steps in order to stop smoking. Some governments have started to add taxes for cigars. Some of them have banned smoking in public places and most countries have restricted the age of smoking. We shall look forward to eradicate this hazard.

Mosquitoes - My greatest enemy

Wednesday, January 7, 2009
I have had enough bad experience with mosquitoes. How many of them should i handle in one night? It has disturbed my sleep so many times that i made them as my first and only enemy. Apart from disturbing my sleep, it has also awarded me malaria. How can i forgive them? I have tried my level best to get rid of them. I have tried all methods i have heard of and all that i could think of. Here are some ways by which you can get rid of this mosquitoes.

Try to spoil all their breeding places. Leave no water open and dont let any stagnant water around your house. These are the main breeding places for the mosquitoes. By removing them you are sure to demolish their fortress. But what if they invade you from elsewhere? Try to grow citrus trees like lime and orange as the mosquitoes are allergic to this smell. Dont ever do the mistake of having mango or banyan trees as they will attract them. If you are growing any of them you can very well forget your sleep.

The traditional way to drive away the mosquitoes is to burn the neam leaves. Now many liquids, creams and gadgets have come to drive away the mosquitoes or even kill them. While choosing them make sure that they are not harmful to human body in any way.

Diabetes - A hereditary disease

Sunday, December 28, 2008
Diabetes has become more than common these days. This is mainly because of our changing food habits and the changing environment. The diabetes is an abnormal condition caused by the combination of hereditary and environmental causes. This is a condition that causes increase glucose level in the body. The glucose level in the body is normally controlled by the chemical reaction caused by a number of harmones and chemicals secreted in the body. The most important of it being the insulin secreted by the pancreas. A disorder in this would cause the diabetes.

Once affected by diabetes, life can become harder as you will have strict restrictions with the food habit and constant insulin injection. The worst part of it is that this is hereditary and children are born with diabetes.

Now to the aid of these patients, sugar free biscuts and cool drinks are available. The type 1 diabetes which is hereditary is very hard to prevent and we can blame only our fate. However the type 2 diabetes which is not hereditary can be prevented. This can be kept away by changing the diet plans and having increased physical activity.

Vaccines and our imune system.

Wednesday, December 17, 2008
Life should not be a bed of roses. There must be some sorrows and difficulties for us to appreciate any good given to us. The same is the case with our immune system. The vaccines to a particular disease is nothing but the virus itself but made inactive so that our immune system can conquer it. Once it identifies the virus and destroys it, the immune system remembers the virus. The next time when an active virus enters, the immune system destroys it before it can multiply and spread.

The invention of vaccine is a very interesting story. It was the time when small pox was very common and fatal. A scientist by the name of Jenner noticed that milkmaids who had contact with the cows and cow pox were more immune to this deadly disease. It was later found that the cow pox virus which has little effect on humans creates an awareness in the immune system for the worst to come. Thus developed the concept of vaccination.

Now with the growing technology, vaccines are available for various diseases and some have already been conquered and the others reduced. Vaccines were developed for polio, small pox, flu, cholerae, plague, mumps, rubella, yellow fever and many others. These diseases are unfamiliar now because of these vaccines.

A Good Sleep

Saturday, December 6, 2008
sleep In todays modern world, everyone is running after money. Time has become so invaluable that people do not care to sleep. Now the number of people who sleep less than six hours has greatly increased. Now people run after money till the age of 40, eventually loosing their health. After 40 they run after health, eventually loosing their money. This can be avoided only by proper sleep.

Studies show that an adult requires about six to seven hours of good sleep and a child requires atleast eight hours of sleep. A good sleep will help us to maintain a good health and a fresh mind.

Lack of sleep can lead to a condition called insomnia which causes the inability to sleep, constant awakenings through the night. Let us forget all our worries before we go to bed and have a peaceful night. Yoga is a way where in you can let your mind be free during the night and have a good sleep.

Some seek the help of sleeping pills. They slow down the nerves, calming the brain and aiding in a restful sleep. This however is not advisable. One should learn to get good sleep with out the help of these sleeping pills. Having a low carbohydrate diet before sleep in the night will help in a good sleep.

Body sweating

Thursday, November 27, 2008
One sweats when one is in a hot climate or when one is working. Do you know why? Under these circumstances the body heat increases and our body reacts to this increasing heat by sweating. We all hate sweating because it gives out a bad odour. But sweating is also a necessary function of our body like respiration and digestion. Sweat mainly takes care of two things. First it helps in excreting the excess water content in our body. It also helps in maintaining our body temperature with in the limits. When the body temperature increases, the brain indicates the sweat glands, which inturn reacts by producing sweat. The sweat glands are thus an important part of the body just like the kidney.

The sweat by itself does not give out any bad odour, but this on reacting with our hair and the dirt on our skin gives out the odour. Sweat does not produce any bad odour in a clean body. On playing when you sweat, your body feels fresh. Inorder to have a sound body, play till you sweat well and then have a bath. Adding neam leaves to the water while taking bath is known to reduce the bad odour.

Why is a warm up necessary

Sunday, November 16, 2008
A warm up is always necessary before a work out. This will help our body accustom to what is to come. A warm up generally includes a five to ten minutes of walking and jogging, and some stretching excercise. This warming up is necessary before any game or workout. Without warm up one might actually end up with muscle pulls and cramps.

A warm up is necessary before swimming also. Before swimming one is advised to wet the body with cold water to accustom to the temperature in the water. Unlike other games, in swimming a muscle pull might cost a life and hence it is very important to warm up before entering the pool.

Many people go to the gym these days claiming to take care of the body. But this is not the case. You are not protecting your body unless you care to perform the necessary warm up.

A warm accustoms your body to what is to come and increases your heart beat rate and blood flow thus helping you to take up the work out more easily. Playing helps you to relax your mind and body. Why make it complicated without the workout.
